Alice Birch is a British playwright known for her works exploring contemporary social issues. She grew up on a commune in Worcestershire and attributes her dinner party scenes to the debates and dramas she witnessed whilst at the dinner table with her elders.

Birch’s debut play, Many Moons, premiered at the Theatre 503 Theatre in London in 2011. Birch has since gained recognition for her incisive writing style, tackling themes of gender, power dynamics, and identity in works like Anatomy of a Suicide (2017) and Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again (2014).

Her screenwriting debut was for the 2016 film Lady Macbeth; she then worked on HBO’s Succession, co-wrote the 2020 TV adaptation of Normal People, and co-created the 2023 Amazon series Dead Ringers.

Birch spoke to Simon Stephens in S2 Ep1 of Playwright’s Podcast.
