Aleksandr Isaakovich Gelman is a Bessarabian-born Soviet and Russian playwright, screenwriter, and author known for his contributions to Soviet and post-Soviet literature. His works often explored complex social and psychological themes, reflecting the turbulent times of Soviet Russia and its aftermath. A childhood survivor of the Holocaust, Gelman became a playwright and screenwriter after working as a newspaper journalist in Leningrad in the 1960s, winning the USSR State Prize in 1976.
