Albert Bermel was an American playwright, translator, critic, and scholar renowned for his contributions to theatre. He was particularly noted for his translations of European playwrights, including Eugène Ionesco, Molière, Georges Feydeau, and Jacques Languirand, which made significant works of the ‘theatre of the absurd’ and classical French theatre accessible to English-speaking audiences. Bermel’s scholarly work included critical analyses and books such as Comic Agony: Mixed Impressions in the Modern Theatre (1993). Bermel also taught theatre and drama at Lehman College, City University of New York.
