Aimé Césaire was a Martinican poet, author, and politician. He was the former mayor of Fort-de-France and deputy to the French National Assembly for Martinique. Césaire was a founder of the Négritude movement and coined the French term ‘négritude.’ He wrote Cahier d’un retour au pays natal (1939), a poetic exploration of colonialism and identity. His writing eloquently challenged oppression and reflected his passion for civic and social engagement.
