Afua Hirsch is a British writer, broadcaster, and former barrister. She has lived in Britain and Senegal, and served as The Guardian’s West Africa correspondent. From 2014 to 2017, she was the Social Affairs and Education Editor at Sky News.

Hirsch’s career is deeply intertwined with human rights advocacy and journalism. As The Guardian’s West Africa correspondent, she reported extensively on issues ranging from social justice to political unrest.

Hirsch has authored two books, notably, Brit(ish): On Race, Identity, and Belonging, for which she won a Jerwood Award. In 2020, Hirsch contributed to the anthology My White Best Friend and Other Letters Left Unsaid at the Royal Court Theatre.
